I want to thank our readers, those who provided needed behind-the-scenes support and encouragement, and those who helped source material for this project. Thanks to Flavio over at vulgarpicture.com for the artwork.
This blog will remain active/available for as long as Google and Mediafire allow it; I will also promise to update previous postings if new sources for "questionable" material present themselves (such as the Peel tracks taken from bootlegs). So keep scanning those tapes!
In the meantime I will continue to blog over at The Power of Independent Trucking, and will look to continue my involvement in this exciting and surprisingly popular Recycle project with our next gig, REMcycle :)

ReplyDeleteI have to say, it's bittersweet knowing this path has been fully traveled. Maybe the occasional delays served well to build anticipation for each new post, and I will miss opening the page and discovering another poster announcing the release of a *new* Smiths single. ;-)

Not sure if I'll indulge in R.E.M. but given the aberration that was Nitzer Ebb - In Order, I'm rather interested in Jeb's new project. Keep the ideas and meticulous efforts coming!

(If you're looking for another project, I would love to hear properly mastered versions of Men Without Hats' early albums/EPs - Folk of the 80s-Rhythm of Youth-Folk of the 80s Pt III - Freeways. These guys were a lot more than a one-hit wonder with a cheesy early MTV video featuring a dancing midget.)

ReplyDeleteIt has really been amazing having all these digital gifts. We really have been spoiled.
This blog has been a great source of comfort, allowing many of us, who were there at the time these records came out, to get a bit teary eyed at times. We were never in doubt that the songs still stand up to the most exhaustive scrutiny being music, lyric, design and sonics. Sonic -wise, you turned us all on again.
More important maybe, it's a great place for a younger audience (lucky buggers) to take each released record on its own merits...especially given that their first experiences of some of these songs where at a Morrissey concert. Now that is a vulgar picture indeed.
That said, I saw the guy three times last year, and he didn't show anything like the passion, respect and love for his own songs that the collective work on this blog has.

Like Mr. A.L., I, also, did not think my appreciation for these tracks could increase anymore than they already had but that's exactly what happened throughout the course of this blog's journey, starting at Day 1.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, thank you not only for the great music, but the little tidbits of information here and there previously unknown by myself. Without this blog, I wouldn't have picked up Simon Goddard's wonderful book, "Songs That Saved Your Life" or the "I-can't-believe-it-sounds-this-good" Rhino Box Set, both of which were money well spent.
It's really been a joy, over the oourse of a year and a half, to open the page on any random day and find a new posting. Not only am I very much looking forward to seeing R.E.M. get the treatment, but also the possibility of putting The Cure through the wringer as well.

Thanks so much - I was lucky enough to see The Smiths in Sept 83 and March 84. Bought all the vinyl at the time, and invested in the recent CD box set, but your work on this project has added something extra. Looking forward to REM...

ReplyDeleteI didn't think I was going to enjoy this as much as the JD/NO Recycle as there were far fewer tracks I hadn't already got on CD, but I was wrong. It's been a complete pleasure and a wonderful addition to Johnny Marr's work on the albums. I really feel like The Smiths are now, truly, "complete"! A huge thank you and I'm already looking forward to REM and Nitzer Ebb x
ReplyDeleteIf this blog was the only reason the Internet had been created then it would be reason enough. My love of The Smiths has never diminished over the years. I loved them from Hand In Glove until Strangeways. I loved Johnny's guitar work, I loved Morrisey's lyrics and poetry, I loved Andy's bass playing and I loved Mike's drums. I saw them play live twice. Last year I went to Hawick to see Morrisey in the wee Town Hall and I drove home laughing and weeping at how the years had passed and how silly and old we all looked. I am of an age where The Smiths have been part of my life for longer than those years without them.
ReplyDeleteThis blog has plugged a few gaps in my collection but mainly it has added more colour and knowledge to the career of the best band that ever were. These songs did save my life and they have been a soundtrack to much of it. These songs deserved this kind of respect and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your work and for simply caring enough to do this.

Quite simply a labour of love, that puts most of the way music is still handled by the majors, to shame. I've always loved the idea of singles as a way of charting my favourite bands progress and you've done one of the greatest, the Smiths, proud. Thank you.

In fact, your work has already encouraged me to complete "Recycle sets" of my own for the Cure, Depeche Mode, OMD, Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs and Adam and the Ants/Adam Ant. It would be great to see you take on these sets one day, too...
